Alan was known by many in the Anglian section as the original proprietor of A&D Verity’s motorcycle shop in St. Ives, but he had several business interests before this, including civil engineering plant, road haulage and car sales. His interest in bikes started as a teenager, and his mechanics skills were honed in the Fleet Air Arm. When his son, Nigel, started racing grass track bikes, this reignited Alan’s interest in motorcycles. He became a travelling marshal and scrutineer at bike races, and ultimately Chief Scrutineer for the Auto Cycle Union, including at the TT, Motorcycle Grand Prix and World Superbike events.
Approaching retirement, he joined the VMCC where he enjoyed rides and rallies with like-minded enthusiasts and latterly found he was regularly winning the award for the greatest combined age of bike and rider. He was happy to share his knowledge and enjoy a good chat over a pint with his friends.
He remained riding until 89. Although the bikes got smaller and lighter his enthusiasm was undiminished, and he continued to tinker with his bikes and take an interest in the family business. Our condolences to his wife Daphne, his sons Trevor and Nigel and their families.
